How much does car insurance cost for a 17 year old?
I can get my license anytime now. North Carolina doesn't offer good student discount. I'm asian, will be driving my dad's 2000 Ford Windstar with 70,000 miles. My dad says that adding me on to his allstate account would cost 1100 every six months. That sounds a little exaggerated. Is there anywhere else where I can find cheaper insurance?

- Your dad's estimate sounds pretty close. Insurance on minor kids with no driving record is way beyond high. Getting your own policy will not be cheaper either since you are likely getting carried on a family policy with a discount and also because your dad will still have to carry you if the car is his (if not, your accident could cost your family the house if you have a cheap policy), Even if the car is yours, you are a minor and anyone that you hit will also sue your parents... thus they will have to carry a policy . Bottom line.. its expensive and it will STAY expensive for at least the next four years for you.. Welcome to the real world. sorry... .
- You should try to get a quote for your own insurance, and see. It's different in every state, but teen boys are the most expensive to insure. You can use a site like Net Quote to get a quote for your specific location. BTW, they don't go by race, so being Asian won't affect your rate. It goes by age. Tell your Dad to get comparison quotes from other companies through Net Quote. If your state offers GEICO, tell him to try with them, too.
- No one on Yahoo Answers can give you an honest answer (no one can even get close to the correct premium)! There are so many factors that only an insurance agent can give you an answer...
- Car insurance is very expensive for teenagers, when i got my license my parents had to pay about 800 more every six months for car insurance ( My parents have Geiko). If you add a new car to the policy it would be even more. It is good to get insurance at a young age because the cost of insurance will go down in time without any accidents. A good way to lower insurance is to take a defensive driver course or drivers ed., but you should check with your insurance provider before you take a course.
- Here is a good page for you and your dad about insuring teen drivers. http://getquotes.ws/Insurance/Automobile/insure-teenage-driver.php
