car insurance companies?

Last year for my first year insurance i put 3 additional drivers on my policy to bring the cost down, now i am getting quotes for my 2nd years insurance policy and to even have one additional driver it will cost me an extra £450 approx. why is this? Also getting quotes for myself, one with the title as a college student and one as unemployed. college student quote comes back at £530 approx and the unemployed quote at £1000!!!!! how can the insurance companies justify that?

Public Comments

  1. there should be some kind of regulation on them as thay can charge what thay like.(get a bike) its cheaper.
  2. Umeployed means you will be driving all day possibly (more chance of accident) instead of leaving it someone for the day like work.
  3. I'm afraid its all on computer now, and as in Little Britain if the computer says no, that's it. All the risk parameters are already in the computer so as soon as a profile is entered the quote is instant. There isn't any room for negotiation. I suppose they think that Students drink a lot (as if) and the unemployed have the opportunity to drive all day. Get a small car, an office job, limit your mileage, pay the first £500 of any claim, garage your car, have an alarm and tracker fitted. Live in the country and watch your premium come down.
  4. It's type-casting really, based on their experience. I s'pose they might consider an unemployed person as a worthless ne'er do well who has neither the interest nor the funds to look after their car properly (sometimes right, sometimes quite wrong). What the insurance industry goes on is its experience of claims made, and those who fit into the categories of the higher claim-makers are those who will pay more, like it or lump it.
  5. I presume you are simply getting Internet quotes. This is not the best way to get the insurance you require. Pay a visit to your local broker, they have access far in excess of the basic and rigid details that you have internet access to and can compare all insurance company products to suit your personal requirements. There is no charge and you do not have to take their offerings if you do not want to. The internet is quick and convenient but very inflexible for individual or out of the ordinary insurance specifications. Talk to a broker face to face, explain your needs and let them take the strain.
