Will my car insurance rates go up if the accident is not my fault?
I live in texas and a year ago, rear ended a vehicle in a low speed accident. They made a claim, but I did not. My insurance rates did not go up.

- You got lucky .
- thats strange. usually your rates will go up if you or another person submits a claim.
- YES!!! If you were in an accident, you should report it to your ins. company, but tell them you want to claim it on the other person's insurance. Ask them how to do it. If they are any good, they will either make the claim for you (to the other ins. company), or they will tell you how to go about it. Every time you make a claim to your ins. company, they will either use a point system, count the first claim as a freebie, or jsut hike your rates. It doesn't matter whose fault it is - if they pay you, they will charge you more.
- Usually not. But in some states, if you get more than a certain number of not-at-fault accidents a year, they can raise your premiums.
- if you are going to the other persons insurance no. you shouldn't report it to your insurance company UNLESS the other persons insurance company does not cover. You will be considered an "at risk" driver
- It is a difference as you were in control of the vehicle. Being on the roadway makes it a not at fault accident. In the parking lot, it is just a hit and run. It would be like whether or not you were parked at your house or driving down the road. Either way, you rates should not go up at all. It was a not at fault accident that you would couldn't control. If your rates do go up, I suggest finding a company that will not raise your rates if you have an accident that is not your fault.
