What laws if any must car insurance companies follow when responding to a claim?

It seems that the only remedy if an insurance claim in Ontario cannot be resolved is to take the issue to court. The average driver may not be aware of any legislation that may force insurance companies to meet certain deadlines.

1. Sorry, the only real requirement for any private enterprise company is...look after the interests of the shareholders. Everything else comes down to coercion.
2. Each insurance company has their own method and time frame of responding to claims. However, they cannot be less than the standards of the State's legal statutes the policy was sold in. Most states have their insurance legal statutes available online in which you will want to look in the chapter for Insurance. If you are overwhelmed by determining the guidelines, your agent listed on your policy should be more than aware what are the rules and regulations. Most State's allow claims adjustments to be appealable if their is a disagreement between policy holder and insurance company. Although, there are specific processes for it and again, referring back to that State's legal guidelines would be needed If you have no agent to refer to then look for a toll free number of your State's Department of Insurance hotline consumer services. Those reps should be abreast of all the details of insurance laws for the State Good luck!
