California car insurance-is it ok to wait 3 months to inform insurance company that my car needs repair?

I saw scratches on my car 3 months ago (I was not in an accident with any personal injury it was probably hit and run) and then I had to leave for an overseas assignment. Now I'm back and when I called Metlife, the rep said something like why did you wait so long? Actually I was also thinking if the cost is low I'll have it repaired myself and not file a claim. The adjuster is coming out but I'm worried waiting 3 months will cause a problem. Any advice?

  1. Your policy plainly states that you have a obligation to report ALL losses in a timely manner -- three months hardly qualifies. Since this is a minor loss you will probably come out OK but be warned: failure to report your loss is basis for denial, so in the future be sure and let Met know. You can always wait to repair it later.
