Car Insurance Companies + Excluding Drivers?

My brother and I are trying to get insurance for our two cars but are having a problem with one of the cars. My uncle gave me my car but we never dealt with switching over the title of the car. Most of the major insurance companies require that the cars be under the name of one of us. We have found some smaller companies that do an exclusion to deal with the problem but the rates are higher. Does any body know of any major company that allows this to happen? Thanks for the help. One of the problems about changing the titles is that he now lives in wyoming and we dont have much contact with him. Can i mail him a form which he can sign or does he need to physically be there to change the title? thanks for the help.

  1. Save yourself some money and headache and get the title changed over it is usually around 12 to change over, if it is a gift from a family then it is free transfer over. God Bless
  2. Progressive does not care whose name the car is titled in, but only who will be driving it on a regular basis. There is an issue called "insurable interest" involved with insuring something you do not own. In plain terms most companies will ot let you insure something not yours because of the chance of fraudulent claims. For example if I could take out a multi million dollar policy on an empty warehouse I do not own...chances are it would burn down tonight. But Progressive will write it and you do not have to prove ownership or even list your uncle. Most companies though only charge around $25 to exclude someone so it might be cheaper to get a policy and exclude him vs. a policy with Progressive. This will depend on your driving Record, age, type of vehicle etc.
  3. go to the dmv as soon as you can and get the car register to you. This will take a major road block out of the way. Most insurance companies will cost more for drivers under 25. Some give good student discounts. But will need updates on that on a regualar basis. If your Uncle dies. your car may be tied up in probate that is why you need to get the titles and redistrations changed with the state. If you are hig risk (several speeding tickets or reckless driveing your are limited on your choices if insurance companies.
  4. lie... OK, it is not the best answer but you need to have the title changed. I am not sure of your ages, but you could put it in your policy under your mothers names and have her add you as drivers. you might qualify for a multi-car discount this way. the insurance company is not going to ask you for the proof of title to verify the names, but some might see that as dishonest. the don't ask don't tell policy works well here, that is how insurance companies deal with people. which ever you decide to go with make sure you get another agent from a different company to read it and explain it to you if you do not understand what the policy states.
  5. IT WOULD BE SO MUCH EASIER JUST TO GO TO YOUR LOCAL DMV OFFICE AND GET EVERYTHING CHANGED OVER BECAUSE THIS WAY YOU WILL BE PROTECTING YOUR UNCLE BY GETTING HIS NAME OFF THE TITLE IN THE EVENT OF AN ACCIDENT.
  6. No, most companies won't allow a driver exclusion form. They're afraid that they'll be dragged into a lawsuit anyway, despite the exclusion form. That's why the companies that ARE giving you the exclusion, charge more for their coverage. The EASY way out of this, is to change the title from your uncle to you. Leader Infinity WILL allow an operator exclusion form. I believe Progressive changed their rules, to only allow a non-licensed operator to be excluded - they were having too many claims from licensed, excluded operators.
