Which rental car company has the lowest insurance prices (LDW)?

  1. It all depends on the coverage you want. I used to be a manager at one of the larger companies in a very large airport. I would advise you to check out the prices of the cars along with the coverage you want. My advice is to go with the coverage that covers the rental car for bodily damage 100%. That way if you are in an accident or something happens to the car, you can call the rental company and they should bring you out another car and pick the damaged one up. But add the price of the car to the coverage and then you can get a realistic ballpark figure. Also, if you wait until you get to the counter, you can ask the rental agent if there are any deals you can get if you take the coverage. They will usually give you a better car for no additional charge because they work on a salary but they get a bonus check every month based on the upgrades they sell. If you tell them you want the coverage, they will more than likely give you a better ca. I still reserve a small car but since I take the coverage I always end up with a much nicer vehicle.
  2. I live in Alberta Canada. When I travel and rent a car, I don't buy extra insurance. I have coverage on my regular vehicle insurance policy on my own car (an extra coverage of about $30. a year). It provides the same coverage for a rental car that you already have on your own vehicle at home.
  3. Many companies will give you coverage under your own policy to cover the damage to a rental car. TAKE OUT THEIR INSURANCE. It may cost more but is less costly if you have an accident. Companies are billing the customers for anything their insurance doesn't coverage like going out and buying a brand new vehicle even though there was only 4000 damage to the damaged vehicle. The car rental company is not asking for 10000 for the new vehicle.
  4. The cost of the loss/damage waiver depends on several things ... what rental company you go with, and more importantly ... Where the rental takes place! The same Loss/damage waiver I sell for $9.00/per day in Upstate NY costs $25.00/ per day in other areas. To be safe, check with the rental companies in the area you intend to rent from. Another consideration is, will the loss/damage waiver be primary coverage? In most areas the answer is yes, making it a very good investment. The primary coverage pays off first, so if the LDW is primary, you have no liability for the rental vehicle. If the LDW is secondary, your own credit card or auto policy is primary, look carefully before you buy. If your own auto policy has to pay off a rental car (average cost $30,000) there will probably be a rate increase in your future (if they don't drop you outright!) Look carefully at the options, make sure you understand everything, the rental agent can (and should) explain every part of the contract in detail, if they can't or won't ... you need to speak with a supervisor or manager! A few well thought out questions now can save you from a nasty surprise later. A good agent will not mind taking the time to answer you.
