Why did health insurance prices double in the last 5 years and not car insurance?
family health insurance plans went from 9,000/yr to 18,000/yr during Bush's administration. Health insurance is quickly becoming the average American's #1 cost, soon to exceed rent.

- Shhh! What are you insane! Don't draw any attention to that fact or they will jack the price up on that too! Ugh!
- The reason is because more people are getting sick and less people are getting in wrecks. hahaha. yeah right.
- Another Bush-bashing liberal-DimocRATic-Socialist.
- Because people are getting fatter and unhealthier and need more healthcare, but they'll always drive the same.
- The Bush admiminstration has nothing to do with it. Medical costs are skyrocketing and health insurance companies have to keep up somehow. More coverage demands have also placed burdens on helath insurance companies. this will continue untill we realize healthcare is not a right, nor is our neighbor's responsibility.
- the cost of medical malpractice insurance has gone up. it's because people are so sue happy
- Because more death resulted from air pollution and natural disaster than car accident.
- It seems to me to be due to "cost shifting". With the boomer generation starting to retire more people are getting their medical treatment paid for under Medicare Coverage. This includes prescription drugs which Bush pushed for. When someone covered by Medicare goes into the hospital Medicare only pays a percentage of what the hospital charges. The hospital then shifts the unpaid portion of the bill to people covered under a health insurance plan in order not to lost money. This also happens when someone with no coverage is treated. The hospital again shifts that cost to the folks with coverage. Another reason is that when hospitals buy new and expensive equipment such as a CAT-scan, they will require that a scan be performed as often as the can when the expense, which is passed on to the insurance companys, may not be justified. The bottom line is that the insurance companys end up paying for more than just the insured's costs.
- It is because the average American is getting older, fatter and not so healthy. As the baby boomers get older the health insurance industry will raise premiums. The cost will be spread out and all ins. customers will feel the increase.
- Yeah... it's getting to the point where the majority of America won't be able to go to the doctor, because they can't afford insurance or the deductable, if they have insurance. I think it all comes down to... how much are you willing to pay to stay alive.. the answer is anything, so how does a capitolistic system work when you will pay anything for the service... it doesn't work... the healthcare companies (both medical, insurance, both malpractice and health, and perscription companies) are all making huge profits... if you know anyone in the business, they are probably making more than most everyone else you know... When does the bubble bust... I think it will soon... especially if costs continue to go up like they have been.
- Do you do an insurance claim when you change your oil, fix your brakes, replace your alternator, or change your tires, the answer is no. You do not make a claim for basic maintance on your vehicle, only when damage is done correct. But people go to the Dr. if they run a temperature, get the sniffles, if Billy falls and scraps his knees, whatever. Most Dr. visits could be eliminated if people used a little common sense and realized that every time they use their health insurance that it stills cost money, the insurance pays the diffence between your co-pay/deductable and the Doctors charges and uses up valuable time the Dr may need with someone else. That why I have an HSA and Catastrophic Health Insurance, and I use it like I do my car Insurance, only when something really bad happens not for every little hiccup. Also last time I checked the government doesn't subsidize peoples car insurance but that is another rant.
- Health Care itself has increased at the same pace. I have no insurance and I know.
- The # 1 problem cited by Medicare was the doctors use (overuse?) of expensive testing such as cat scans, MRI's etc. If you go into any emergency room with any pain you will probably have thousands of dollars of tests done to you before they tell you it was just indigestion. Add to this is the extreme shortage of doctors which keeps prices up and waiting rooms filled. The AMA is the doctors union and they have been very successful in stopping new medical schools from being built. The good news is that 10-12 % increses in health care costs are now tapering off to 6-8% increases.
