Rather than a national heathcare program, why not just make heathcare insurance mandatory?

When I first start driving a car, auto insurance wasn't mandatory. Guess what? Most people didn't buy it, and policies were expensive as a result. When the state passed a bill requiring auto insurance, the free market drove the price of insurance down. The same would happen with health insurance. Most people who don't have health insurance are young and healthy. They feel they don't need it. But, at some point in life, they will. It makes sense that these people should help support a system that they will need at some point in there life. If everyone was required to get health insurance, insurance companies would be falling all over themselves offering low cost policies to healthy young people. This profit base would ease the cost across all age groups. Rather than create a monster, a massive government agency, why not try mandatory insurance first? Poverty level people already get free healthcare. A tax system to pay for healthcare will drive the price up not down. Requiring everyone to buy insurance is the same effect as creating a national program without the cost of a bureaucracy.

  1. There are many at such a poverty level that they can't afford insurance. The homeless, the mentally and physically challenged, and yes, even those who abuse the system are still humans.
  2. I think comparing auto insurance to health insurance is like comparing apples to oranges. Auto insurance is there to serve the public good by guaranteeing you (depending on your level of coverage) financial assistance in the event of an accident. Health insurance is more of a personal decision, especially with the spiraling costs of healthcare. While you can force auto insurance down someone's throat, I don't think you can do the same with health insurance. While I believe in health insurance and wouldn't take a job that didn't provide it, I know a lot of people feel differently. As far as national healthcare goes, I think it would be a great idea if you could control the taxation that it requires, guarantee a fair wage for healthcare workers, and guarantee that there wouldn't be a long wait to see doctors and specialist's. From what I understand, the Canadians pay exorbant taxes and sometimes have to wait weeks to see a doctor. If I am wrong, I hope someone from Canada corrects me.
  3. Because even at low costs, some group of people aren't going to be able to afford that AND be able to pay rent/eat/clothes for children... And if the gov't is the one paying for healthcare, everybody who pays taxes would pay into that....So they would catch those young people who work anyway.
  4. Do you mean MY boss has to pay? Yeah, I'm all for it!
