Please help me choose a first car for a young driver . . . .?
Hiya, I need it to be high reliability, as I can't afford to have it repaired every few months. I need low costs - Insurance, and tax and for it not to drink fuel. Good both in towns and motorways but not always fast lane! Quite comfortable drivers seat. I was thinking Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris. What would you get ? I am in England and can't really afford to spend any more than £2,500. Thank-you, I will choose a best answer as well.

- They are both economical to run Question of taste. Mine would go for the Yaris. Good luck
- Definitely without question Honda, my first car was a Honda and my parents both have Honda's. They are the most reliable, just tires and batteries and you will be set. Another place you can look is Consumerreports.org for a small fee you can access the repair records of the make an model your interested in.
- Hi, My first car many years ago was a mini and I still believe that it is a great first car. They are in vogue at the moment and as well as being reasonably priced, they are good on fuel and very reliable. They are small and nippy and you get obtain a second hand one for your budget. test drive one and see if you like them. Good luck and happy driving.
- Cars like Vauxhall Corsas or Renault Clios are popular with first time drivers. Both cars come in 1.0l and 1.2l engines which will keep the cost of insurance down. Tax will also be in the cheapest bracket and engines this size do not use up much fuel. You will be able to get a car in very good conditiob that will be very reliable for around the £2500 mark. Even less probably!
- Ford Ka is ideal - cheap as chips to run, insure, repair when it goes wrong, and is about to be replaced so you'll get a real bargain as the used market will take a minor tumble as soon as the new one is released. Already you can get two year old ones for 3500, but, and this is crucial to your economic needs, a 10 year old one is still worth about 1000 as there is such strong demand from people such as yourself. Better built than the Corsa, and without the 'boy racer' image that will have caused a used one to have been thrashed. Micra is great, but lacking a little power and could do with an extra gear as it's a bit noisy on motorways. I'd guess that a £2500 Yaris is going to be a bit knackered, and more expensive to repair than a Ford. (People will tell you that the Ka has old fashioned mechanicals and an engine that comes out of the ark (well, a 1970s Cortina anyway) but this is why they're so cheap to repair and insure. Buy a tidy one and get someone to buy you a cheap personal plate and no-one will be able to tell if it's brand new or 1997 vintage; they're identical unless you're a Ka anorak.
