First Car For A Young Driver - Help Needed!?
Hiya, I need it to be high reliability, as I can't afford to have it repaired every few months. I need low costs - Insurance, and tax and for it not to drink fuel. Good both in towns and motorways but not always fast lane! Quite comfortable drivers seat. I was thinking Nissan Micra or Toyota Yaris. What would you get ? I am in England and can't really afford to spend any more than £2,500. Thank-you, I will choose a best answer as well.

- I would definately suggest a Vauxhall Astra 1.4 16v - it was my first car! its a group 4 in insurance terms and very reliable. ive got a V reg (2000) i got it for £2300 a year ago. auto trader has some nice deals on vuaxhall astras!
- Hi there! The Ford Fiesta - years between 97 and 99 have low insurance, are great to look at (before wierd designs) and have a good interior. They are also quite cheap!
- i learned to drive in a yaris and i think thier great cars low tax and insurance i also like renalt megan really good cars you would get one cheaper that is a few years old like 2001,2002,2003
- well you wont find a yaris for that cheap, they're too new. you'd be better off getting a honda civic, their cheap, cheap insurance, engine will run forever and get good gas milage. good luck and enjoy driving!
- Forget 2,500, spend no more than 1,000 on a 1.2 litre or smaller engine - great mileage, lower tax, less things to go wrong! Citroen do quite reliable cars, I have an AX which has only required very minor things replaced or fixed, mainly brakes. Citroen parts are very common and also fit Peugeots. Oh and my AX only cost £250!
- toyota or a honda
- I bought a Rover 45 for my first car it does great mpg not too slow and it was cheap. It is quite comfy aswell.
- mitsubishi mirage. or mitsubishi lancer really good insurance/seats are nice/don't eat up fuel. Very nice cars. o yea and my friend has a toyota yaris. its very nice not my kind of car though hope some of this helped =]
- I would choose a cheaper car than that. We all want high reliability but £2,500 is paying over the odds for a first time buyer. unless you have loads of dosh and a few grand here or there doesn't matter It would be more prudent as it's your first car to look at something cheaper (£500 is ample, Honda Civic circa 1996?), get is inspected before sale, and if it needed repairs get a recommend for a local garage.
- Heya- I had a Ford fiesta..S reg which was 99 i think..it was fab..never broke down. My friend had a ford KA...51 reg..really good...lovely inside...infact she wants to sell it now for £2,500!!...I'd say go for a fiesta or KA..they are Fords and cheap to insure and good on fuel..also you can pick up spare parts easily!
- You can't go wrong with a Renault Clio. A Ford Fiesta is a good bet for a first car as is a Nissan Micra. Make sure you get a low engine size, say 1.0 or 1.2 at the most, this will not only keep the insurance down a bit, but also stop the young person from speeding around all the time.
- Nissan Micra makes for a good coffin in a pile up on a motorway. ADDITIONAL: The thumbs down crew are obviously ill educated to the fact that a TOP TV motor program did a simulated motorway pile up and showed that the Nissan Micra was no more than 4ft in length after a pile up. They said any occupants would have been killed instantly. SO, keep the Micras off your list.
- A Ford Fiesta would also be a suggestion > I found one to be economical, reliable and for me reasonable to insure.. For you though insurance would be a lot higher. Maintenance and service costs were not undue. .
- I would recommened a Nissan Micra i learned in one nd it was the best car i ever had, only visited the garage for my service and u'll find one cheap enough. theres some good ones on www.autotrader.ie
- I reckon the Yaris will be out of your price range, but a well cared for Nissan Micra should provide you with sterling service.
- The Yaris will have a better resale value when u want to get rid of it also havent heard of any bad problems with em. Just make sure you get timing belt checked immed whatever u decide to buy. If timing belt breaks the engine goes bang and if its a cheap car its probably not worth the money to have the engine repaired. Hope that helps
