AARP? Health insurance cost? Car insurance?
i am currently looking into aarp for my parents. they are currently 59 and self employed, entering retirement very soon. i am not too familar with aarp but have gotten an application in the mail as well as researched their website. i know the annual fee is $12.50. it would be very helpful if anyone who is a member give me some prices they are paying for health insurance, car insurance or any helpful information as to whether it is worth joining. thanks!

- It's going to vary BY STATE. AARP doesn't actually OFFER insurance. They REFER you to someone ELSE who offers insurance. They have a big group, and try to get a bulk rate - which will vary wildly from state to state. You're going to have to get the quotes on your own, sorry.
- They are a powerful political lobbyist and 30 - 40 years ago they did great things. However, just like everything else they got too powerful and it became more of "what can we do that's best for AARP, like lower the age to 50 so we can get more paying members" rather than "what can we do that's best for seniors". The insurance plans are written through regular insurance companies like Hartford, Foremost, and United Health. They are sometimes slightly less expensive (not always) but they're also less comprehensive. What they give up in premium you give up in benefits. Their health insurance policies are stripped down. For example, there is no copay for doctor visits, you pay the full price at the doctor's office. Their Medicare plans cost the consumer more in co-pays overall than almost all the competition. It's still you get what you pay for and there are no deals through them. I'll never join.
- I am an AARP member so that I can have their car insurance which is handled by the Hartford Insurance co. I have not filed a claim against them, so I cannot speak to the claims side of the equation. My car insurance premiums are less than I have been quoted elsewhere. They do send out a request for your actual car milage about every two years to be sure they are rating you correctly. If you travel, your milage goes up and so does your insurance costs. IF your parents use the car in their business, they may not be able to get this insurance depending on what they do for employment. I advise them to disclose how they use the car in their business when they apply to get the correct answer. This insurance does not cover one of my cars, because I use it just for making deliveries. I have to get commercial insurance for that car elsewhere. Like many insurance companies, I can have my checking account drafted monthly to make it easier to budget and not get in a squabble about a payment arriving on time. I do not know anything about their health insurance, so I defer to the insurance agent who gave you an answer there.
- see this http://gsx1.com/InsuranceComparison.html it's one form to get a number of quotes from different insurers. It's free and a big time saver, these are all the main American insurers competing to get your business so you are bound to find something that suits you, if it works out remember my points please :)
