No claims discount on car insurance?

I've been driving in the UK for 13 years and never had a crash or made a claim on my car insurance. However, my wife has had three accidents, all of which have resulted in claims against our joint policy. I have now separated from her (not as a result of the accidents!) and want to buy a car of my own. When I look for car insurance quotes, can I state that I've had 13 years of no claims or do I have to take into account her 3 claims because they were made against a joint policy?

  1. you have had no accidents, therefore you have no claims
  2. Claims on a joint policy need to be disclosed - however you can make it clear that in each case you were not the responsible driver....
  3. You have to be very careful what you declare on an insurance application and make sure you answer every question to the best of your knowledge or your insurance is invalid. I strongly recommend you speak to your insurer and ask the question specifically, different insurers may view your situation differently. No claims is more commonly becoming more like an accured discount than a benifit for good driving. I suspect they will count the claims against your policy rather than accepting that you have personally had no claims.
  4. If the insurance was in your name with your wife as a named driver then it is your insurance that has been claimed against and will need to be declared. If the policy was in your wife's name with you as named driver then your future insurance policies are not effected. However if the latter is the case then you do not have a no claims discount as you were not the the holder of the insurance. Some companies will honour the fact that you have never claimed as a named driver on someone else's policy and give you a small introductory discount on this basis.
  5. You will only be able to claim the no claims bonus left on your joint policy. (I assume the policy is in your name with your ex wife to drive as an additional driver - if not then you will have to start from sctratch). I would take the advice from an insurance broker to make sure that you don't have to declare the incidents - as they were claims made on the policy - albeit from your ex. Normally the insurance company would make a note for their records (to avoid any queries in the event of a claim) - but your premium will be unaffected.
  6. Yes you have had three claims but I would tell the insurance company the circumstances. Did you have no claims protection? It may shield you from the worst
  7. Your new insurer will need proof of your NCD, and will request it from your previous insurer. So ring up the original company and explain the situation. They'll either tell you that you can have full NCD, or they won't! Simple as that. As has been mentioned just don't lie. If you do make a claim and your insurer discovers a deceit they will not pay out. Not surprised you left your wife if she crashed so much!!
  8. No doubt the easiest way to get insurance quotes is on the web. Why would you waste your time on the phone calling around? the last time i needed quotes on insurance i used one of these comparison sites and it was great. this is the site i used and it was quick like less than 5 mins. The last thing I want to do is listen to elevator music while waiting for a salesman. Anyway I got good quotes and ended up saving money so I was happy. So shop around and compare quotes which is easy on the net. Good starting point is at this site. http://insurance.deal4-you.com Good luck.
