Why do good drivers get better car insurance rates than bad drivers?

It's not fair. Some people are genetically predisposed to be bad drivers or just don't care. Why should they be charged more than drivers who do not participate in risky behavior? The point links to another YA quetioners question and my earlier question on whether healthier people should get a break on their health insurance. The overwhelming majority said no! Hi Desdamona. The answer is: Probably higher than yours.

  1. Because all insurance is based on risk, the likelihood that the company will be paying claims (and thus losing money). And I've never heard of a genetic predisposition toward bad driving.
  2. Could it be possible that insurance companies are "For Profit" organizations? Nah, I guess that would be too simple!
  3. I don't know where your going with this... Is this a parody or something? Anyway, its all about risk. The less risk you pose for loss the better investment you are for the insurance company. Same with interest rates. The better your credit score, the better chance you will not default on a loan. So you get a better interest rate. They are looking for the best bet for their money.
  4. profit
  5. He who plays hard, pays hard.
  6. simple, bad drivers cuz more crashes and damage more stuff for which the insurance company will have to pay for and then the insurance company loses money, but good drives tend to stay out of crashes and accidents more than bad drivers and thus the insurance company doesnt have to spend as much money of the good drivers so they dont pay as much as the bad drivers........this really is a stupid question that could be answered with just a little common sense.
  7. Because that is fair if you do things that will hurt you and kill others you should pay more. DUI and DWI.
  8. Higher risk = higher rates. Same goes if you have cedar shingles on your house Greater fire risk= greater rates That's why we should have profiling at the airport Are you a middle eastern looking person Most terroist acts have been committed by middle eastern looking men = greater risk
  9. Simple. Because bad drivers cost the insurance company more money in paying for claims. Driving bad is 99% a choice...not a predisposition.
  10. Because they are less risk, which translates to less chance that the insurance company will have to pay out on the policy. Let me put it to you this way. you have two friends. and you tell them If you give me money every year, I will pay for a new Bike if your gets stolen. The one guy takes his bike inside every night, and always locks it in a rack that is in front of a police station. The other leaves it out at night and never locks it. The bikes are worth $100, how much would you charge them, and who would you want more money from up front?
  11. Because we are less of a risk and the Insurance company gets to keep the money we pay. Bad drivers cost the Insurance company when they have accidents.
  12. This has got to be a joke. If I take caution to drive defensively and not to get any tickets or into any accidents, you think that I should pay the same rate as some ass that doesn't? I'm still laughing.
  13. You're right; these drivers are clearly being victimized by the capitalist pig insurance companies. I think Obama should institute a program of federally-funded entitlements for these poor victims of the profit-driven Big Insurance companies.
  14. For the same reason life insurance gets higher the older you get. I,,m 70 years old-Want to sell me a million dollar policy?
  15. Your kidding, right?? I'll bet I know why you ask. R~<><
  16. Really, what IS your IQ?
