What kind of car details will lower the cost of insurance?

I have to buy a car and the insurance will be costing more than the actual car. Some factors I can't change like the fact it will be my first year with a full GB licence, my gender, age, where I park it, etc. But when considering the car I will buy, what factors might lower my insurance costs? Keeping in mind my price range for the car is 450-900 pounds, - what makes/models are hardest/easiest to break into? - what security devices would make a difference to the cost of my insurance, and how much would they cost? - what year of car is considered to be built more securely than in the past? (harder to break into...I understand older cars are easier to break into, but what is the general cut-off line of "old"?) - style or colour of car? - any other factors?

  1. To be honest, car insurance companies are really only concerned with the things you can't change. Age, gender and experience. If there was one thing about the car that might make a difference, I would go for price, and possibly engine size. A cheap car with low engine size will be a lot cheaper to insure than an pricier one with a large engine. What you have commented on regarding specific security factors are actually pretty much irrelavant. Another way you reduce your premium is to accept a higher excess. This means that when you have an accident and your insurance company arrange and pay for the repairs, you will contribute more money for the repair costs. You pay the excess only when you have a repair, so if you are willing to take the risk of having to pay a larger excess if you have a repair, then you will benefit from a lower premium. Bear in mind however that only some insurance companies will offer this flexibility, with others having only a fixed and non-negotiable excess.
  2. my car is a peugeot 206 and is 9 years old, cost me £2000, and insurance is over a grand a year, im 20 had my license since july, just browse on gocompare.com until you find the insurance your looking for, i dont think you will get any for 450-900 pounds unless your over 25.
  3. How it works is as follows: Insurance compaies look at their statistics on the car groups. Thats why Ford Escorts are more expensive to insure because they're a chavy car and are quite often involved in crashes and burglarys. So, you want to get your hands on a car thats not used so much. If you can get your hands on a Nissan Micra that might be quite cheap because the only people that drive them are OAPs. As for colour, I dont think they take that into consideration ;) Good luck!
