Will my car insurance rates go up, hit and run accident?

I was parked out of my girlfriends house and apparently during my visit someone had hit my car that was parked on the side of the road. The other car just nicked my bumper (no damage to fender) but hit it hard enough to totally tear the bumper off the driver side and the front of the car and was left dangling on the passenger side. There were also scratches on the top of my driver side mirror, and the mirror itself popped out and was shattered. Basically my question is...if I claim it, will my rates go up? I believe I am insured under my parent's names and not my own. I had one accident that was my fault about 2 years ago.

  1. When the adjuster comes to look at your car they can tell who was at fault most of the time. If you have a good insurance company they will understand because these things happen all the time. Your insurance should no go up however you will have to pay the deductible to get your car fixed since you have no one else to claim at fault.
  2. It depends on the company. The insurance companies have done a real good job bribing politicians, so they have things pretty much their way. Better than 50% chance they will raise your rates.
  3. It depends on where you are, but in most countries the insurance companies will reduce your no-claim discount, causing your renewal premium to increase (and which will clearly have a knock-on effect in subsequent years). Depending on the size of the claim, they may also increase the premium at renewal. Do remember, so far as fault is concerned, it is a 'no-claim' bonus, and not a 'no-BLAME bonus'. Best of luck!
  4. DEPENDS ON THE INSURANCE COMPANY THAT YOU ARE WITH AND HOW YOUR HISTORY HAS BEEN WITH THEM INCLUDING PAYING ON TIME HISTORY.
  5. Well, on the one hand, the accident itself isn't surchargable, so it shouldn't generate a "surcharge" for either you or your parents. On the other hand, depending on what STATE you are in, this is still a claim on your policy, and it's possible that your insurance company can "downgrade" the rating tier, thus giving overall higher rates to the policy. It's kinda sneaky, but it happens. You'll have to ask your agent to be sure, what exactly is done in your state.
  6. no it should not make your rates go up, however, who ever calls and reports it to the insurance company will have it held against them if they try to change insurance companies. I found this out after i reported hail damage to 2 of my cars, then later i got divorced. i was the one who called the damage in so when i tried to change companies to get away from where my x had insurance they told me that those 2 claims counted against me as seperate claims also so they would have to charge me higher insurance for 2 yrs until they went off of my record, but if i had stayed with the same insurance as my x it would not bother me, and it did nothing to him because i was the one who handled all the finances so i was the one left to report them. so let your spouse call in the claims people and dont make them any wiser to why you want them to do it. Oh yeah by the way they held his accidents against me also because they happened when we were married and under the same policy, so i really got hosed
