Auto liability insurance included in the price of gas.? situation: apparently reliable sources online and in newspapers report that about 18% [two in eleven] vehicles on the road in Florida [where I am] do NOT have auto insurance. same sources report that these same uninsured vehicles are determined to be the cause of about 22% [just over 1 in five] of all auto accidents in Florida. both trends are increasing. Uninsured/underinsured coverage on our auto insurance costs almost $150 a year per vehicle/driver. If everyone had insurance, this cost would be far lower or absent completely. multiply $150 dollars a year times the estimated non-commercial vehicles in Florida [15.9 million per FLDOT] times 82% have insurance and we're collectively paying $1.955 billion each year that we maybe shouldn't have to pay at all. So -- Proposal -- vote Yea or Nay -- and WHY !! Gasoline taxes should be increased sufficiently to include government provided [offered for bid to major insurers] insurance covering injury to others and their property for all accidents that occur in the state. "Pain and suffering" damages are NOT included, nor is "lost wages". Misc notes: the Legislature will, of course, require that hospitals, etc. give their best prices to this government program to contain costs. As usual, intentionally caused accidents will be a felony and punishable by large fines and imprisonment. Coverage for your vehicle if you are at fault is your responsibility -- buy it or not as you see fit [or as agreed with your auto lender]. Same for "lost wages". Of course, some provisions will have to be made to prevent people from dodging the tax and buying lots of gasoline in Georgia for use in Florida, etc. PLUS: hospitals and doctors will always be paid to treat auto accident victims. innocent people who are severely injured will not be impoverished or bankrupted by the reckless or thoughtless acts of others. {aside: gas guzzlers, speeders, and large tubs will pay the most.} would you be for or opposed to such a program? I've also lived in a state that has "no fault" insurance, but without the feature of not being able to sue at all. [which may be unConstitutional.] Rates and rate increases weren't any better. I have read the first 9 comments and add the following: Florida already has law requiring proven insurance to get license tags. Doesn't work. We also have a distressing large number of people driving who do not have a license at all. So many, that the courts can't or won't jail them when they're caught. You already pay for the other driver's lack of insurance, that's what UU [Uninsured/underinsured] coverage is. Yes, you may decline to buy UU coverage. Under present system, if you do and are hit by an uninsured driver who flees or is poor -- you pay for your own hospital bills. So you are running the risk of getting hit and having no one you can sue [or collect from] and thus have all your family's assets go to the hospitals and doctors. How fair is that? Toocan -- you missed a vital point -- as far as medical, everyone in one accident would have same insurance company [state's choice], and all would always be covered. no blame to assign or way to avoid paying.

Unitrin Direct Auto Insurance (Any good?)? Asked by: hyphenga-ga I recently responded to an e-mail for a free auto insurance price quote (I'm in California). I wasn't really looking to shop around - and wasn't planning to switch companies to save a buck or two, but I was kinda shocked when the price quote I got from Unitrin Direct (same coverage limits and deductibles) was $510 less than I'm paying now. I called and asked what the catch was and they said they sell direct with no agents/offices and pass the savings onto the customer (logical, but obviously scripted answer). They also touted an A.M. Best "Excellent" rating, but what good is financial stability if they bungle claims (for example) or have terrible customer service? So I guess I'm looking for a little confidence - or a big fat warning - before I jump into anything. Are they reputable? Is there any objective info available about them? (I'd love any good/bad comments from Unitrin customers out there too.)

I have shopped around for cheaper full coverage auto insurance, that what i already have. I can't seem to find no car insurance cheaper than what i have. My car insurance is more than my car payment. Which auto insurance companies will not cancel policy/raise rates if there is an accident? I am comparing prices for car insurance. I have had State Farm forever. After talking to them and asking them what I should look for when shopping for car insurance is a policy that wont cancel you or raise rates if you have an accident. We have made claims in the past (storm damage and I hit a tree stump - no actual vehicle to vehicle accidents) and our rates have not gone up. Do other companies do the same? Good price on full coverage auto insurance? I just bought an 09 ford escape XLS, with a 4 cylinder engine and lo-jack installed. I'm 27 years old and a married federal employee. Since the vehicle is financed I have to have full coverage insurance of course. I'm located in New Jersey so its a bit expensive. With $1000 deductibles, road side assistance and rental car coverage I was quoted at $113.95 a month OR $602 for 6 months from esurance... Is this a good price? Unsure about auto insurance law? I got a great quote (liability only) from an agent who went through the big auto insurance casualty company for my commercial vehicle. It's almost too good. It is more than half the price of the next lowest quote I found. The thing is that the next lowest quote came from the same auto insurance casualty company but through a different agent. And, I have gotten other quotes through several different agents through the same casualty company. I called the big company directly and told them the situation. They told me that if he had the VIN of the vehicle then there could be no problem as far as classification of the type of commercial vehicle. My major concern is that should there be an accident, and this lower priced insurance that I am paying was not accurately quoted by the agent, am I liable for damages? Are there clauses in the paperwork or contracts that protect me from this situation? Will I be obligated to pay the balance of what I was misquoted if an accident occurs?

Would an auto insurance company have a reason to ignore the fact of having an incorrect VIN Number? I got a dui years ago and have now saved enough to buy my car and get it on the road. The risk of my age and record, I found myself going through an insurance company that looks like it literally has holes in the wall. Their advertisement is that they will accept anyone. And they will for the month to month price they can get. I noticed they copied down the wrong vin number for my vehicle. They stated that it was not important for sr22's. I had some spare time later and went back with the correct one written down for them to copy. In front of me they wrote down the wrong number off the sheet I handed them. "well okay... I'm just going to write down this". "it shouldn't be a problem" Is basically what they said to me during the process. is there any reason they would avoid using correct info? Or is it really just not that important? (PS The number on my mailed insurance cards is incorrect and I just wrecked the car last week).
Why do people drive without auto insurance? Don't give me because it costs too much and they cant afford it. I think it's the price of having a car. You wouldn't get a car and say "well tires are expensive, I can't afford them" you just need them. The point of insurance is to be able to afford to fix any damages you may cause to another driver's car or person. If I wrecked someone's car I would certainly want the other person to be able to get their car fixed or replaced. And if there was injury I wouldn't want someone else saddled with huge medical bills because of a mistake I made. Is that just me?

It is more than half the price of the next lowest quote I found. The thing is that the next lowest quote came from the same auto insurance casualty company but through a different agent. And, I have gotten other quotes through several different agents through the same casualty company. I called the big company directly and told them the situation. They told me that if he had the VIN of the vehicle then there could be no problem as far as classification of the type of commercial vehicle. My major concern is that should there be an accident, and this lower priced insurance that I am paying was not accurately quoted by the agent, am I liable for damages? Are there clauses in the paperwork or contracts that protect me from this situation? Will I be obligated to pay the balance of what I was misquoted if an accident occurs?

Retroactive auto insurance premium? I obtained an auto insurance policy in August 2007. In January 2008 (five months after the policy was purchased) I received my policy renewal. The renewal price was substantially more than the initially policy cost because the insurance company had written my original policy with innacurrate information (assumptions they made that were incorrect, there was no falsification on my part). I cancelled the policy and found a new provider. The insurance company then sent me a bill retroactively charging me for the original policy with the new information and premium changes. Can they retroactively charge me for the policy that I had already paid in full based on our original agreement? Does the insurance company have any legal recourse or right to collect this money? I already filed an official complaint with the NJ Dept. of Banking and Insurance and am waiting to hear back. BTW don't need people's opinion, looking for response from someone who knows the laws in regards to this Don't trust Allstate Incorrect assumptions by the agent include homeowner status, and participation in a payment plan I was never enrolled in or agreed to. I understand that they can change my premium based on this information, the thing I'm disputing is that they changed my premium five months after the fact and billed me for coverage I had already paid for.
